“What are you talking about when you say ATA Chapters?”, he asked me. I was training the new guy, and this is what I told him:
ATA chapters (sometimes called 'ATA 100 System Codes') are a way of categorizing the various systems that are on a plane, originally created by the Air Transport Association in 1956. Look at any Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) for any civilian aircraft. At the bottom of every single page is the ATA chapter for that manual.
ATA chapters are configured like this: 12-34-56. This most important numbers are the first two. So in my example here, you would say, 'That's chapter twelve.'
For example, Chapter 29 is 'Hydraulic Power', and it includes units that are part of the Hydraulic Power system. Aviation Repair Technologies (ART) repairs many hydraulic accessories, so this is an important chapter for me.
The reason that I mention this subject is that some airlines - especially large airlines - will assign specific ATA chapters to individual repair buyers. This helps the repair buyers become expert in that area. They become expert in the parts, and expert in the repair stations who repair them. These are people you need to know, and people who need to know you. Despite the bean-counters’ attempts to commoditize everything, this remains and will continue to remain a relationship business.
I have a list of ATA Chapters on my bulletin board, and I consult it several times every single day. You can find a nice one at any trade show, such as the MRO Americas, MRO Europe, AP&M, and the ACPC. I'll be exhibiting at all of them.
To continue, see the Wikipedia link that tells the ATA story nicely: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATA_100 The Wikipedia link lists every ATA chapter in deep, deep detail. This is more information than you will ever need. The aviation swag that you pick up at the show will be useful enough, and it'll do you more good than another foam-rubber airplane.
After pinpointing the appropriate buyers, I tell them that I sell and repair parts in the following ATA chapters:
21 Air Conditioning (shut-off valves, fans, rotary actuators, check valves, butterfly valves, skin air valves, cabin pressure valves, regulator valves, rate control valves, ducts, plenum assemblies, syphon assemblies)

ONE LAST NOTE,
and few people will know this: The full ATA chapter codes are made up by each manufacturer (not by any government or neutral authority). The OEM's must follow the traditional designations of the first two numbers, but assigning the last four is something that they figure out for themselves. So within one manufacturer, similar the ATA chapters generally imply similar parts. Of course - that makes sense. BUT....and here is where it gets interesting: A different manufacturer can make a completely different part and assign it exactly the same ATA numbers. Here's an example. These are all hydraulics (chapter 29), they all have the same ATA system code, but they are for completely different, unrelated parts:
29-10-02, P/N 6005-1, OEM = Tactair Fluid Controls
Description: Solenoid Operated 3-Way Hydraulic Directional Control Valve
and
29-10-02, P/N 70200, OEM = Sitec Aerospace
Description: 2/2 Way Manual Bleed Valve
and
29-10-02, P/N: 1U1503-2, OEM = Woodward
Description: Directional Control Valve Assembly
Same ATA chapters, but different parts! Who knew?
I've worked in aviation for 24 years and I didn't know this until comparatively recently. That is what I like about this industry – keep your eyes and ears open and you will learn something new every day.
